dhanteras and diwali

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi, is a Hindu celebration when Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber, the god of wealth, Lord Dhanwantri, who is considered the god of Ayurveda, are venerated. Dhanteras is celebrated a day prior Chhoti Diwali and is trailed by Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Purchasing metals like gold, silver or utensils is considered promising on this day. This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 25, Friday. Dhanteras is also celebrated as "National Ayurveda Day".

As indicated by a famous legend, it is accepted that the devas (gods) and asuras (fallen angels) played out the samudra manthan (beating of the sea) for amrit or the heavenly nectar of eternality. Lord Dhanwantari rose up out of this stirring conveying a kalash or a container of the remedy. It is thus, utensils are purchased on Dhanteras.

Lord Kubera, who is the God of wealth, is venerated on the propitious day of Dhanatrayodashi. Lord Kubera is considered the "treasurer of the gods" and "ruler of yaksha" and a gatekeeper of wealth.
